Beyond a shadow of a doubt, trekking the endangered mountain gorillas is the major activity in the remarkable Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo, where Mikeno Lodge nestles. As of now, Mikeno Lodge is the only possible accommodation to stay at during your time in Virunga Park. Virunga National Park along with Mikeno Lodge is located in the eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo and the Park is one of the three national parks in the respected Virunga Massif.

The Virunga Massif, straddling through three countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda), is the oldest protected area on the second largest continent – Africa.

However, the conservation area (Virunga Massif) was divided into three national parks – each of the above three countries consisting of one park. Besides Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga, Rwanda’s Volcanoes and Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks all lie in the by-then Virunga Massif before splitting.

The Virunga Massif inhabits the largest population of the endangered mountain gorillas. Besides the three Parks in the Virunga Massif, the other endangered mountain gorillas can only be found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park; of which as a national park, it has the greatest number of mountain gorillas calling it a home.
